DMCG hosted a world class symposium in medical education

 

Over two days DMCG hosted a world class symposium in medical education "The Road to Excellence- A cornerstone of sustainability."

The aim of the symposium was to:

• Build a network of health professions educators with the common interest of promoting educational excellence in academic medicine.
• Develop and enhance skills pertaining to teaching, professional development, quality in medical education and educational scholarship.
• Create a forum for sharing innovative ideas and educational innovations and health professions education.
• Promote DMCG as a resource for educational excellence.

Day 1 at Atlantis the Royale in Dubai started by Prof. Yousif El Tayeb who stressed the importance of keeping abreast with continuously changing well informed highly aspiring society. The talk pointed out the dynamic forces that influence any change. He also outlined the qualities required for the future graduate to be clinically competent, socially responsive, and universally accredited.

H. E. Mariam Matar commended the value of DMCG in building her career as a researcher in the area of genetics and proposed her work in genetic modulation for improved aging processes. She highlighted the importance of genetics as a base for new treatments.

The second session featured discussions in curricular reform by Professors Janet grant, Hossam Hamdy, Ahmed Rashid, Lamia Mohsen, Mohamed Taha and Salman Guraya. The session discussions concluded that Contextual curricular development is the strategic choice for curricular reform and that an adopted curriculum needs development in context before it is ready for implementation.

This was followed by an expert discussion in assessment where the audience listened to Professors John Norcini and Ibrahim Inuwa. This session was concluded with a need to establish systems for assessment that redefine competencies and allow for a continuous spectrum of student improvement which is aligned with the new approach that DMCG will adopt with the new curriculum.

Simulation was another session that grabbed everyone's attention featuring Professors Mohamed Mouhaoui, Ahmed Minawi and Richard Ormonde. This session highlighted the importance of the use of simulation in both undergraduate and postgraduate education with reference to the different modalities used in Morocco, Egypt and UAE. There was also a stress on the rationale of use of simulation in the curriculum and the added vale of this on student learning. This also reinforced the new direction adopted by DMCG and its investment in the newly established simulation center and its plans to maximize the utilization of simulation in the new curriculum.

The day was wrapped up with a session on teaching and learning featuring Professors Mohi eldin Magzoub, Rania Salah, salah Kassab and Dalia Gaber.

This session identified the need for use of portfolio in teaching, learning and assessment of undergraduate education. It also paved the way to establish indicators for student engagement including the use of script concordance test to increase student performance in team-based learning.

The highlight of the day was the welcome address of the board of trustees moderated by Dr. Sohail Bajammal featuring H. E. Dahi Khalfan chair of the board of trustees.

H.E. emphasized the importance of the visionary legacy of Haj Saeed Lootah. H.E. discussed the role of innovation in education for ensuring that our students/ generations are ready for the job market in the future. H. E. also pointed out that the standard of education in UAE is not up to the aspiration levels of the leadership. DMCG will materialize this recommendation and establish a spirit of excellence in medical education that spreads throughout UAE."

This was followed by Prof. Amer Sherif CEO of Dubai Academic Health Corporation who elegantly described the new intersection between healthcare, medical education, and research.

His excellency Mr Ahmed Bin Mishar alluded to the importance of the health professionals in contributing to formulation of health regulations.

With a plea for creating a conducive learning environment from one of the school students, the crowd was left with the burden of making a better future in education for the future generation.

Day 2 on DMCG campus featured workshops that attracted attendees from all over the world.

A workshop was conducted on "How to sell your online course" by Prof. Shifan Khanday that taught attendees how to make sure that their online content is marketable in a way that honors academic standards.

A workshop on OSCE was conducted by Prof. Abdelmoneim Elmardi where attendees were taken on a trip to establish rules and guidelines on how to conduct a workable OSCE examination.

Two workshops were conducted on simulation by Prof. Ahmed Elminawi and Prof. Mohamed El Mouhaoui and Dr. Youness Zidoun. The workshops established guidelines for proficiency-based simulation practice and development of trainers in simulation.

An attraction of both days was the History of Medicine and epidemics course by Prof. Osama ElshaZly which engaged students and faculty into an understanding of how the history of medicine feeds into the future of medical practice.

The event was a huge networking event with over 400 attendees from all over the world. Moderated by Prof. Rasha Eldeeb, Prof. Fouzia Sharsad, Prof. Abdelmoneim elmardi and Dr. Youness Zidoun.

The symposium has achieved its set out objectives and positioned DMCG as a center for educational excellence.
