Biography of Prof. Janusz Jankowski

Academic. Janusz Jankowski is a doctor, educationalist, clinical scientist, executive administrator, national policy adviser and coach. He has experience in senior academic management roles including the Sir James Black Professorship (Oxford, UK), Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation (in both the EU and Oceania), and now as Provost in UAE.

Janusz graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Baccalaureate in Medicine and Surgery (1983), the University of Dundee with a Doctorate of Molecular Medicine (1996), a Doctorate of Philosophy in Molecular Genetics at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Imperial College at the University of London (1996) and at the University of Oxford gaining a Masters in Epidemiology and Clinical Trials (2009).

Clinical and Education. Janusz is a clinical expert in reflux esophagitis, Barrett's oesophagus, acute medicine and clinical trials as well as in cancer prevention and health promotion. As a clinician, Jankowski has created centres of excellence in medicine including the Digestive Disease Centre, University Hospitals of Leicester 2002–2012. He also set up Scotland's endoscopic surveillance service for Barrett's oesophagus (ESBE) between 1988 and 1991 at Ninewells Hospital of Dundee. Janusz is editor-in-chief of prize-winning key reference text books (Wiley) and peer-reviewed journals (Taylor-Francis) in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal cancer.

Research and Innovation. Janusz's group have undertaken several unique studies including the isolation of label retaining cells (putative stem cells) in the oesophagus, and identification of the genomic factors associated with the premalignant condition Barrett's oesophagus. The aspirin and proton pump inhibitors AspECT Excel Trial, is one of the largest and longest chemoprevention studies globally. He is a highly cited clinical academic with a h-index of over 80 and has over 300 peer-reviewed publications including in Gastroenterology, The Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, and The New England Journal of Medicine. Over 20 years he has raised £120m+ in funds.

International Policy. Janusz is a National Policy Adviser, and he has also advised National Governments, Parliaments, and Judicial Systems in a variety of roles. He has been one of four national clinical advisers for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence UK, chair the GI Cancer Prevention Committee of the National Cancer Research Network and chair of the Education Committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology. Janusz is currently chair of the European Union TRANSCAN-3 committee. Between July 2019 and June 2022 he was vice-chair of Cerebral Palsy Sports, England and chair of the board of directors at University College of Osteopathy. He is a non-executive director on several hospital boards, most notably the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, London where Sigmund Freud practised.

Awards. Janusz has been awarded the Sir Francis Avery Jones Research Award (British Society of Gastroenterology), the James Black Senior Research Fellowship (University of Oxford) as well as national accolades for authorship, and 40 years of unblemished clinical service.

Coaching. Janusz is also a very experienced, certified, executive coach and mentor who has an array of approaches, including Socratic, Supportive and Psychodynamic.
