Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)
MMI is an interview method proven to provide more reliable and objective assessment of a candidate than traditional interview method.
This method involves 7-10 stations, each comprising of a written scenario and 1-2 Interviewer. Candidates must rotate through all stations. Each station has a time limit of 5-8 minutes. The advantages of MMI over traditional one-interview team are:
1. If a student did not perform well in one station due to stress, the student can compensate by performing well in other stations.
2. Interview result is an average score of at least 10 interviewers, distributed across stations.
3. Each station has an objective checklist for assessing a particular competency.
4. The opinion or bias of a single interviewer will not affect a candidate’s overall interview result.
The competencies/skills tested in MMI are:
- Interpersonal skills.
- Communication skills.
- Reasoning skills for ethical dilemmas.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Awareness of self and society.
- Conflict resolution.
The MMI does not test knowledge mastery in any field. Rather it tests "higher order thinking skills" and "soft skills". It is expected that applicants would have developed these skills in their school education and over the course of their life experiences. The aim of MMI is to gauge applicant’s compatibility in these skills with the profession of medicine.
